Description
From Punk Rock to Vietnamese Vọng cổ and 1970’s Khmer classics
As a musician, I am always looking for ways to express myself. My journey started as a punk rocker in 1977 and has led me to sing Vietnamese folk songs and Khmer classics. It has been a wild ride.
Jaipal Phuong
My proudest musical moment has been developing the Jaipal Phuong character in Vietnam. I mostly sing in the Mekong Delta dialect and specialize in Vong Co, which has foundational melodies called Ly.
So many great moments
I was lucky enough to have been one of the few foreigners ever invited to sing at an official event on Nguyen Hue Walking Street in Ho Chi Minh City.
It would have been impossible to learn to sing Vietnamese, let alone Vong Co, without the countless hours of help and support my friends and fans have given me. Thank you all!
It’s still hard for me to believe I sang live on Vietnamese National Television HTV4
Another moment I’m hugely proud of was beiing the co-host of the singing contest Chuong Vang Vong Co.
Folk Music connects me to people, their language, and their history.
